According to the Sustainable Development Goals Special Edition Report 2023, completion rates for schools are rising but uneven. Primary completion only rose from 85% to 87% (2015–2022), lower secondary from 74% to 77%, while upper secondary stagnated at 53%. Many children had to drop out due to inadequate funds, forcing them into menial jobs — especially in Africa, where families often cannot afford even one square meal.
It's disheartening to see exceptional children waste their formative years at home. Without stronger measures, by 2030 only 1 in 6 countries will achieve universal secondary school completion, leaving 84 million children out of school and 300 million without basic literacy/numeracy skills.
THE SDG-4 WORK PLAN
- Primary Lower Education (ages 5–11): Payment of school fees, scholarships, and sponsorship to ensure continuity.
- Secondary Higher Education (ages 12–17): Webinars and workshops to foster holistic, sustainable approaches, with active partnerships for integration into higher education.
